4 Secrets I Learned From A Job Search Networking Event - Cubicle Chic

4 Secrets I Learned From A Job Search Networking Event - Cubicle Chic 4 Secrets I Learned From A Job Search Networking Event Vocation configuration, Job search July 15, 2016 0 CommentsEver since I went to PoshFest 2015 last year with no escort and wound up causing a lot of enduring friendships, I to feel like I've vanquished organizing, the dread of conversing with successful, possibly scary, individuals doesn't hinder me from making associations any longer. So when I saw that Career Contessa was having this Meeting Do's and Don'ts net working occasion, I joined without speculation twice.P.S. A side note about Career Contessa on the off chance that you didn't think about them. Think proficient vocation centered Refinery29 redid for proficient ladies, and with understanding and direction like ones seen on Glassdoor.com and Salary.com. The Career Contessa organization slogan is A vocation asset for ladies who need more and are sufficiently challenging to get it. I've been a Career Contessa peruser since mid 2015 and their substance has gotten SO smart thus inside and out. My ongoing most loved is an article on compensation development of a VP in Marketing and how he/she went from making 45K to 156K in 10 years. Job Search Do's and Don'ts via Career Contessa and Six Degree Society Photo by Kathrina Sio Job Search Do's and Don'ts via Career Contessa and Six Degree Society Photo by Kathrina SioInitially, what pulled in me to this occasion was the great line-up of specialist: spotters from Nasty Gal, Hulu, and Glassdoor relegating insider data on how questioners can prevail during pursuits of employment. What I didn't think about, was the way marvelous the curated networking which was crafted by Six Degree Society, was going to transform out.I am going into the eighth year of my expert vocation, and I've gone to a ton of systems administration occasions. I have not gone to one with such pleasantly settled structure for participants to connect with one another, without abnormal games or fake discussions. I was matched with Amber and Natalie, who both have computerized media experience and aspiration to do extraordinary things in their substance creation venture. (I likewise met Connie, not through the blending yet simply old fashioned networking). Six Degree Society concentrated cautiously the bio I furnished and combined me with individuals who share comparable or correlative experience or ranges of abilities as me. My discussion with Amber and Natalie felt normally captivating and we as a whole gained such a great amount from each other. Indeed, I definitely know there will be joint efforts not too far off with these #girlbosses soon!Besides the free beverages, great complimentary gifts, and all the mingling, I took in a couple of things that were really astounding (to me at least):1) Treat your spotter as your best promoter. They need you to succeed nearly as much as you do! Be straightforward with them, be alright with them, and rely on them.2) Don't show up too soon for a meeting. Thirty minutes is too early; try showing up there 15-5 minutes previously. In case you're early, chill in your vehicle or an espresso shop.3) Have the pay discussion prior in the meeting procedure as opposed to later. Do it in a careful manner. You don't generally need to uncover your present pay level (my sincere belief is that you ought to never unveil this data), however this is to ensure your ideal pay run coordinates the organization's budget.4) Men and ladies have altogether different exchange strategies; men will in general be more reality situated in their dealings, and ladies will in general rundown all the more genuinely based reasons. Regardless of whether you're a man or lady, approach this subject with your value (in light of your experience and open information) and not close to home reasons or life circumstances. What are your meeting must-do's and should not-do's? In case you're a questioner, what's your greatest annoyance?

Or on the other hand you built up another procedure to supplant a wasteful one that had been set up for quite a long time. Or then again you carried a pleasant group convention to an association that had a staggeringly dull organization culture. You turned in assignments in front of cutoff times, you elected to help colleagues with their tasks, and you approached your chief for included duty. Presently, things have changed. You've subsided into your daily practice however you've additionally grown somewhat careless. Rather than working ahead on your plan for the day, you let your obligations heap up until the latest possible time. You don't have the opportunity or, to be perfectly honest, the inspiration to inquire as to whether there's anything you can do to support your partners or director. 5. You're Not Motivated to Advance Your Career In the past you felt like the expert world was readily available. You were anxious to ascend to the head of your vocation, so you searched for each chance to propel whether that implied proactively requesting a pay survey or going after a new position inside the organization the moment you saw it posted. At that point, things got settled inside your present job. You realize how to carry out your responsibility and do it well-so why go after that recently empty trough job that would require substantially more duty? Presently, it's simpler to just meet the necessities of your position and that's it. In the event that these sound recognizable, you might be verging on smugness in your present job. Are you guilty of turning a blind eye to the biggest world of work issue Viewpoint careers advice blog

Are you guilty of turning a blind eye to the biggest world of work issue For the first time ever, there are now more people in the world  over 65 years old than there are under five. More of us will live longer lives than our predecessors. As a consequence, more of us will be working to an older age than has traditionally been the norm before. This is our new reality, and it represents a monumental demographical shift a shift that is going on before our very eyes. But, are we, as leaders, guilty of turning a blind eye? I think it’s fair to say that most leaders haven’t yet fully woken up to the new reality we’re faced with. We are failing to appreciate the huge impact an ageing world will have on the organisations we lead, and the people who work in them. And, even if we do recognise this shift in demographics, most tend to still see an increasingly older workforce as a burden, not the great untapped opportunity that it is. Clearly, for everyone’s sake, this must change. We must realise that this isn’t a passing fad, this is a deep-rooted and unstoppable change that will have massive implications on the world we all live and work in. It’s even been described as one of the biggest issues of our time facing the world of work. As Tony Wilson, of the Institute of Employment Studies says in this  Financial Times article, “It’s this ageing of our workforce, much more than the future risks of automation, that policymakers and employers should focus on.” Ageing is an issue for  all  of us, not just the ‘old’ So where to start? I believe that all of us, regardless of our age or seniority, need to embrace and celebrate getting older, rather than doing our best to ignore, avoid or deny it. Instead, we must start to explode some of the ‘myths’ I spoke about in  my last blog, as exactly that, as ‘myths’. Let’s face it regardless of what society or the media tells us, a higher chronological age is in no way an accurate predictor of skills, capabilities or ambition. None of us have an expiry date stamped on our foreheads, and we don’t suddenly become null and void when we hit that exact date. In actual fact, as each year passes, we have more and more to give, but in different, equally valuable ways. Wisdom is something that is gained with time, just as experience is, and both are invaluable. Our ageing world isn’t just an issue ‘older’ people should be grappling with, planning for, or trying to make sense of though. As  Paul Irving, Chairman for the Center of Future of Aging at the Milken Institute quite rightly says, we  all  have additional time to use spread throughout our lives. So, if you think about it, younger people have as much, if not more of a stake in this than any other generation. As  Professor Andrew Scott  put it so eloquently, ‘the future old are the current young’. This issue isn’t going away, and it’s the responsibility of all of us to build a better, more inclusive world for the generations that will come after us. I think challenging the pre-existing biases we  all  have in our own minds is the first, and most crucial step on the road to achieving the workplace transformation that  must  happen for our organisations to not just thrive, but to  exist  in the future. Only by positively re-framing our own personal perceptions of ageing, can we then make the fundamental changes desperately needed to help our ageing workforces enjoy productive, happy and fulfilled careers for many years to come. Five ways we can help our ageing workforces have long, happy careers with us So, what exactly can we as leaders do to make sure our increasingly ageing workforces are given what they need to have long, happy, fulfilled and productive careers with us? Here’s my view: Bluntly, most organisations have designed their systems based on the assumption that there will be a natural exodus of staff when they retire, usually at a fixed age. This just isn’t the case anymore. In the UK, the default retirement age was legally scrapped years ago. Yet we still operate as though people will automatically leave around the same time, and establish our HR policies to reinforce that belief. So, we as leaders, need to make changes to the way we do things if we are going to handle this challenge well. This is a topic we covered in our latest  Hays Journal  and I’d like to summarise some of the points the article makes, as well as add a few thoughts of my own: Provide the flexibility older workers may need:  Flexibility isn’t just something older workers want, it’s what we all want. But it does seem to be particularly important to this demographic according to  Andrew Caplin, an economist at New York University, 60% of retirees say they’d go back to work if it was more flexible. As we grow older, the reasons behind our need for more flexibility undoubtedly change. For example, one in five older people care for an older dependent or relative, and some may be part of what’s called the ‘sandwich generation’ where they have children who are financially dependent on them, as well as responsibility for caring for an older relative. When I say you need to ‘provide the flexibility older workers may need’, I’m not just talking about allowing them to leave an hour earlier on a Friday. I’m talking about considering offering part-time roles, compressed hours, mid-career breaks, phased retirement, care days, even the option to swit ch from a permanent to a contract or temporary contract.  Amanda Mackenzie, Chief Executive of Business in the Community suggests looking at job sharing options for older workers when women go off on maternity leave. For too many of our ‘older’ workers, work isn’t yet flexible enough to meet their personal needs, and that needs to change. Help older workers adjust and adapt their jobs to their skills and motivations:  Older people, like all of us, want meaningful work, a sense of purpose and the opportunity to make a contribution to society. However, depending on the type of work they do, we as employers may need to help them make adjustments to their existing roles. For instance, how could we better utilise the empathy and balance that older workers often bring by shifting them from physically demanding roles to customer-facing ones? Or are there opportunities for your more experienced employees to share their wealth of knowledge in a mentorship or coaching role? Perhaps you could be facilitating more  horizontal career moves, or even craft their existing roles to emphasise the features that are more personally meaningful to them, as suggested by  Wong and Tetrick. Importantly, as explained in this  Harvard University video, when adapting roles for older workers, it’s not just about ‘keeping them busy’ â€" the worker must feel psychologically connected and engaged in the tasks at hand. Invest in their skills and lifelong learning:  According to  Irving, training and reskilling tends to drop dramatically for the over-50’s. But mature employees, like all other generations, want and need to feel that the organisations they devote so much of their lives to are committed to investing in their continued development, no matter how old they are. Without that, as an employer you risk signalling to them that they are ‘too old’ to invest in. You are implicitly signalling that you don’t see the value in helping them get better at what they do, because they’ll probably retire soon. When deciding on how best to deliver the training, always remember that older people are just as diverse as any other segment of the population. So, a personalised, tailored learning approach will be most effective. For instance, reverse-mentoring might work for one person, but another may get more from classroom training. As with anything, and with any generation, there’s not a one-size- fits-all approach that can be easily rolled out to everyone. Build careers around individuals, not groups of individuals:  Ambition and drive doesn’t magically disappear when you reach a certain age. To ensure the engagement and fulfilment of all, it’s important that career development and planning is encouraged across the entire workforce. Planning for the future and setting goals shouldn’t just be focused solely on those who potentially have more years ahead of them. As  Jon Andrews, People and Organisation leader at PwC says, “I think what our clients need to be thinking about now, is about setting up their organisation so that it creates agility and their ability to build careers around individuals, rather than groups of individuals. Fundamentally, that’s going to take some time to shift, so putting things in place now will set them up for the future.” Also, the fact that our lives and thus our careers are getting longer would also suggest that future career paths and journeys will need to become far flatter, and longer than th ey are now. After all, if, at the age of 35 you’ve reached what you think is the pinnacle of your career, what on earth do you do for an encore? As  Stuart Kirk, Head of Global Research at DWS, suggests, the elongation of our careers means that we need to become more patient when it comes to the expectations we have around our own career trajectories, and encourage our employees to be too. Create an age-positive culture:  Research  shows that 85 per cent of professionals globally believe that an age-diverse team is beneficial in generating more innovative ideas. Do you think this understanding is echoed in your organisation? As leaders, we must aim to be leading organisations in which the benefits of diversity are widely known, accepted and embraced, by everyone, of all ages. Younger managers shouldn’t feel threatened or concerned by the prospect of managing somebody who is older than they are, or that older people are ‘blocking their progression’ in some way. Everyone’s voices in the team should be heard, no matter how long that voice has been around for. As you’ve read through the above points, you’ve probably been thinking to yourself, “this is all well and good, but surely, we should be making these changes for the benefit of every generation in our workforce, not just our older employees?” and you’d be right. I’m  not  saying that we should be treating our ‘older’ workers differently, as a collective whole; as  Professor Andrew Scott  says, “older people are just like anyone else â€" they’re heterogeneous.” What I  am  saying is that a consideration for all forms of diversity, including age, must be woven into the very fabric of how we run our businesses, so that each individual gets what they need to flourish. If we manage to do that, then we really will be future-proofing our businesses. It is a fact that our workforces are ageing. We can’t press pause, we can’t rewind the demographics. This is our new reality and we must start to change things to adapt to this new world. If we don’t, we will be doing our organisations, and the people that work in them, a huge disservice. If we don’t adapt, we’ll watch on the side-lines while our talented, experienced, and knowledgeable workers, people who have been with us for years, walk out the door, and into the arms of those competitors with a better approach. (Except if you so happen to be rollin in some ??, this should in any case leave enough for everything else.) Something to shoulder at the top of the priority list is your home store. Dont Waste Your Profile Pic On These Things!

Dont Waste Your Profile Pic On These Things! The photo you use for your profile on social media and professional sites is prime real estate. This is the face of your online brand, right? This picture is what comes up on an internet search by a potential employer, colleagues looking at your LinkedIn profile, and networking contacts. People are normally visually-oriented, and that profile pic is what their eyes go to first. So why waste that advantage? No profile pic at all is like saying you dont care so why should they care? Using a logo markets that logo, not your career Poorly lit, grainy photos dont say much about your professionalism Selfies rarely look like anything but selfies (and please, NO FISH LIPS!) Wild party profile pics look like HR nightmares Your kid is cute, but they arent hiring your baby. The sames goes with pics of you and your significant other. Dont use those for your professional picunless you co-own a business together and are building your brand based off of that Using a different profile pic for each site weakens the impact of your brand If you want to maximize the potential of your profile pic, think seriously about what it looks like and where you put it. Having the same photograph as the face of your online brand on all your profiles; LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, your blog, etc. gives you consistency. People associate consistency with reliability, and that instant recognition of your photo acts as a logo for your brand. But the photograph itself also matters quite a bit, so it should be excellent. You can set up proper lighting and background then use a timer, but it generally will work much better if a photographer friend takes your picture or you opt for a professional session. Background should reflect your industry or be a color flattering to you. Lighting should come from several sources to avoid weird shadow effects (this is why self-portraits rarely work well) and smiling is more appealing than a deadpan mug shot. You should be dressed the way you would be at a job interview and look professional. Its a good idea to renew your profile pics once a year so they are current. Your online brand is a combination of everything someone like a potential employer can find about you on the internet. Your profile pic is the face of your online brand, and profile development  should include making sure you arent wasting its potential.

How To Back Up Your LinkedIn Contacts [Highly Recommended]

How To Back Up Your LinkedIn Contacts [Highly Recommended] Free services do not make guarantees LinkedIn did a major server upgrade the other month, their own blog informed the world that the site would be down for at least five hours. In the end the site was down for almost a day (more for some) and judging by the reactions on Twitter, this frustrated people in offices all over the world. If you use LinkedIn daily for business development, recruitment or marketing you can be left in a pickle without it. This got me thinking, what if an upgrade goes according to plan but a few accounts just happen to be deleted? And what if one of those accounts happen to be yours? What if there is an outage for a week? LinkedIn is a fantastic tool that manages your professional contacts, chances are you have been building these over years and theyre very precious to you. Can you imagine living without the tool tomorrow? As much as I am sure LinkedIn would like to be fail-proof, they cant promise that all your data will be there in case of a server meltdown or a hacker attack. This is obviously especially true as they are a free service (to most users) and as such we cant expect to get assurances. How do you back up your contacts on LinkedIn? If you have ever uploaded an Outlook contacts file to LinkedIn, youll be familiar with how this works. As opposed to importing contacts, we are going to export contacts. These contacts will be downloaded in the shape of a spreadsheet containing names, emails and other details which will be essential in case you have to start an account all over (God forbid). To export your business connection contact information, log in to LinkedIn and display your connections (click My Connections). Youll see Export Contacts click on this and your download process begins. You will be asked which format you prefer, both formats (VCF CFV) can be used with most applications. Then fill in the verification text to tell LinkedIn youre human and your contacts should come through on a spreadsheet. Now that you have downloaded your backup you can breathe out and relax. I would suggest doing this on a monthly basis just like any other backups that you do regularly. My question for you: did you ever back up your LinkedIn data, if so when was the last time?

Resume Heat Map Eye Tracking What Recruiters Look at in the Crucial 6 Seconds

Resume Heat Map Eye Tracking What Recruiters Look at in the Crucial 6 Seconds I have written before how most recruiters spend about 6 seconds on average on each resume they receive for a job position they are hiring for. According to a study carried out by The Ladders,  it was  found out that recruiters spend only 6 seconds reviewing  an individual resume. If you have that short a span of time to make an impact among tens, if not hundreds, of other CVs, you want to know exactly what the recruiter will be looking at. According to The Ladders report Recruiters rated resumes with an obvious information hierarchy as “easier to read.” On a Likert scale of 1 to 7, self-written resumes (below left) averaged 3.9 versus 6.2 for the professionally rewritten resume (below right), a 60% increase. Photo Credit: The Ladders In the short time that  they spend with your resume, the study showed recruiters will look at your  name, current title and company, current position start and end dates, previous title and company, previous position start and end dates,  and education. The two resumes above include a heat map of recruiters eye movements. The one on the right was looked at more thoroughly than the one on the left because of its clear and concise format. 426

The Basics of Building a Productive Workforce

The Basics of Building a Productive Workforce What can you do to improve the motivation of your employees? Its time to take it back to basics, as I list my top three fundamental factors I believe effects employees in the workplace. It can be as simple as giving your office a new lick of paint, or increasing collaboration in the office, but these things all work to increase productivity and boost motivation. 1) Environment: The working environment can effect motivation in employees for a few reasons, all of which play a large part in the productivity and overall effectiveness of the workforce. It can be as simple as the colour of the walls, so what three things can you change up to increase motivation? Lighting   Lighting is a very important aspect of a good working environment. Having low quality lighting can cause issues including eye strain, fatigue and its even been proven that low lighting can add to the effects of depression. Its important to keep your employees eyes happy so invest in a good lighting system, preferably with natural light bulbs. Put down the florescent tube lighting, NOW! Wall colour Its been proven that colour can profoundly influence behaviour. So what colour is best for motivation? It depends! Go for blue if youre looking for a relaxing and motivating boost. Opt for yellow if youre looking to increase creativity and alertness. Red has been proven to increase motivation of those doing physical work, and green is a good colour to use if you want to promote the idea of balance! Take your pick. Furniture Having a suitable desk and chair for your employees is an important aspect of  employee wellbeing which leads to improved productivity. Make sure you provide adjustable desk chairs and dont forget pillows and cushions if necessary. Including risers to adjust the level of screens will work wonders in improving posture and comfort at work. 2)  People: Interaction with work colleagues is such an important part of work life. The experience of working at your brand can be greatly affected by the employees who you choose to employ. You can use this interaction as a way to promote productivity in the workplace, and as well as the added boost in motivation, employees will also feel happier and enjoy work much more. Collaboration Collaboration in the workplace is important for so many reasons. Firstly it allows for added creativity and discussion not only will this increase friendships in the workplace, but will later on improve motivation as they enjoy the experience of working in your company. High performers If you think theres an employee who needs an extra push in the right direction, surround them with high performers. A study undertaken by Michigan State University revealed that those who were the “weakest link” on a running team  improved the quickest when  performing as part of a high-achieving team and this can work in the office too. 3) Basic needs: The old fashioned method of tasks and rewards is SO  nineties. Employees need more than a monetary bonus or a dinner from their boss. Instead, they need what they really want more annual leave, a flexible schedule and the chance of promotion. Annual leave Its important to remember that taking a break from work can increase productivity when at work. So letting employees have a good break every now and then will work wonders for productivity. Richard Branson has even let Virgin Group employees have as many days leave as they want and its working wonders for their productivity. Flexibility Employees will really appreciate a more flexible schedule when it comes to work why not offer the chance to work from home or  from a different location? Or  change the official working hours of the company and see what happens to productivity and workplace motivation? Growth Nothing is more motivating than knowing youre near a possible promotion. This is why its important to provide the chance of growth and manoeuvrability within your company. Your employees will appreciate it. In Your Last Semester of College, Dont Waste Time Looking Back

In Your Last Semester of College, Don’t Waste Time Looking Back [one_fourth last=no]The biggest fear after college is that of the unknown Tonya Vrba [/one_fourth]We are into February already. In only three months, May will be upon us and I, like many, will be graduating from college. Graduation is almost equivalent to being thrown to the wolves, my weapon of choice, a Bachelor’s Degree. If my education is strong and has true value, I will, no doubt, persevere. If not, the wolves will consume me. This semester I’ve been doing a lot of looking back. Regret is trying to throw a wrench into my plans, but I won’t let it. Regret has no place in the celebration of your education. Here are some helpful tips to keep in mind as you face the world after college. Image Credit: www.memonic.com 1)  Think of the great classes you’ve taken All college students have at least one or two classes they wish they had never taken. Maybe they got a bad grade or maybe the class was just pointless. Don’t think about the classes you should have or shouldn’t have taken. A student could stay in college for decades and still never take every class they are interested in. Instead, focus on what you have learned. There are many who would give anything to be in your shoes. Whatever your GPA is, be proud. 2)  Don’t let finances derail you Like most college students, you’ve no doubt earned a hefty amount of student debt over the past years. Don’t think about the money you may have wasted going out and having fun. As frivolous as those actives may seem, they are essential. Your friendships were not solely formed in the classroom. These friends now form your support system and many of them are facing graduation right by your side. Everyone has debt. It may be necessary to continue living like a poor college student for some time after college, but it will all be worth it. Never doubt the quality of education and friendship that money earned you. 3)  Look for jobs constantly Upon graduation many face the daunting task of finding a job. Don’t stress out about finding a job, but make sure you are always actively looking. Start looking for a job before graduation and you will have no regrets. If you are one of those who worries about having a job in the future, there is no better remedy than to start looking now. Don’t think about the number of rejections you may get. Rest in the peace of knowing you are doing all you can to snag a job. Increase your chances by having your college career center look over your resumes and cover letters. Use the resources your college offers while you still have them. 4)  Take control Where will you live? What will your salary be? Where will your friends be? What will your life look like in a year and will you be happy? There is no way to prepare for every ‘what if’ in life. Instead, take control of what you can influence and rest in the fact you have done all you can. Make a possible budget to live off after college. Plan out what you will do if you don’t find a job. There are options, like staying in your college town until you find a job or moving back in with your parents. You will feel happier and more confident if you have a game plan for any situation. 5)  Relax and have fun This is your last semester of college! Graduation will come fast. Enjoy your college experience while it is here. Be happy and proud of what you have accomplished. Cherish your last semester. This is the end of an era in your life. Don’t let it pass without a little celebration. I extend early congratulations to all college students facing graduation. The personal and professional growth you have experienced in the past years will propel you into the future. Be ever confident and ever positive and good things will come your way! 16
